When asking people for TV-show recommendations that have a bit of fall/cozy vibe, many will name one very popular show: Gilmore Girls. Aired for the first time in 2000, the show embodies the vibe of that period. In the focus are the two protagonists, Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore. A mother and daughter team that lives in a small town and is known for a coffee addiction and quick-witted comments.
The show follows the two of them throughout their day-to-day life, which includes boyfriends, difficult parents, school drama and eating a lot of burgers with fries. Lorelai, who got pregnant with Rory at 16 and raised her on her own, is still struggling to deal with her uptight parents and always has a joke or an ironic comeback up her sleeve. Her daughter, Rory, is a very smart and quiet girl who reads a lot and dreams of going to Havard after high school. Even though she’s shy at the first look, she also has a lot of witty comments and sarcastic jokes in her pocket. The two of them together, and their fast, reference-spiked dialogues, are the heart of the show.
Besides the already entertaining interplay between Lorelai and Rory, many other characters enrichen the show with their little quirks and specialties as well. We have Luke, the grumpy, but sweet diner owner or Sookie, and the amazing chef and best friend of Lorelai, who can also be a bit crazy. There is Paris, the always tensed high-achieving girl who is in a constant battle with Rory over who is the best in school; or Lane, Rory’s best friend, who’s struggling with her free-spirited love for rock while living under the eyes of a strict religious Korean mother. These are only a few examples of the many interesting characters that make the show what it is: sweet and fun.
As a viewer, we watch Lorelai and Rory fall in and out of love, deal with big and small crises, and find a way through life. It is not a show with spectacular happenings or shocking twists. It is a show for the heart and the soul, which makes it so perfect to watch while the rain is dropping on the windows and the leaves are falling slowly. The colors and the music are soft; the lightning is warm, and most of the episodes deal with a normal day-to-day life. It gives a lot of comfort watching the two women challenging the big and small obstacles in their lives while having funny dialogues and a very strong mother-daughter bond.
But not just the two protagonists and their many cozy nights on the couch eating takeouts and watching movies give the show a perfect fall vibe. It is also the cute little town the two of them live in, with its many festivities and sweet small-town quirks which transports a feeling of wholesomeness. Many episodes of the show also play during the fall or winter. And one does not have to think much while watching as there is no deep content. Instead, you can just sit back and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and happy mood of the show. Much of what Lorelai and Rory go through are things one can relate to or has experienced as well.
It is a perfect show for the fall because it embodies the feeling of fall. A feeling of coziness, warmth and comfort that can be experienced while watching the two Gilmore Girls and their cute small-town life.
